High River: Night One (June 18)

We arrived safely into the town of High River on Tuesday around 2pm. On the way out of Medicine Hat, there was a big truck DOT (Department of Transportation) stop. Some of the chuckwagon outfits got pulled over and checked out for different things.

We managed to bypass them, thank goodness. We don’t need any trouble there. We do get our trucks inspected before we hit the trail in the spring, so we really have nothing to worry about. It’s more of a hassle when you have livestock on because you don’t want them to have to sit too long in the trailer.

The three-hour trip here was just right. A good time for me to just sit and think. The weather was perfect when we arrived and the committee had mowed all the grass where we parked. It looked so nice. We got the pens set up in record time and unloaded the ponies to run around and eat fresh grass. It sure didn’t take long for more of the outfits to fill the grounds. I always say we are a band of travellers going from town to town doing what we love.

Yesterday the rain settled in for a good part of the day so we decided that it must be a movie/nap afternoon kind of day. First though Rick and I headed into town on a date, just the two of us…to Peavey Mart. One of my favourite stores. We were on the hunt for a “Y” for the hose. We found one.

Then we also came out with some bright orange “Colt Cosgrave” socks for Rick! He just had to have them.

And one other thing came out with us too, a new cooler for the beverages. It’s supposed to be some great item that keeps your ice frozen way longer than most others. We’ll see just how that fares for us as the summer goes by. So far, I think it was a good purchase.

From there it was back to the grounds to cuddle in to watch a movie. It was no thriller to say the least, as Rick fell asleep in the first 10 minutes. I watched it right until the bitter end, hoping it would get better but it didn’t. NEXT!

CBC crew

Today Greg and his right-hand man from CBC arrived to do some filming and interviewing. They wanted to put together a story on our grey wheeler Zorba. Last year, Zorba had some health issues so we had him looked after by some local vets and Renault from the university. It really was amazing what they did, how they helped him and that he is back in the so-called bullpen today. We are so thankful. They will be airing this sometime during the Calgary Stampede.

Rick Fraser Team 23

So Rick and his equine team tonight were placed in the ninth and final heat coming off the 4 barrel. Alongside were Kurt Bensmiller on 1, Obrey Motowylo on 2 and Kirk Sutherland on 3. The hook tonight was our short barrel team of Speedy on Left Lead, Nickle on Right Lead, Sneakers on Left Wheel and Law on Right Wheel.

Chanse couldn’t ride for us this time as he’s riding for Kirk. So we hired up Cole Somerville to hold the leaders on Ace and we still had Dustin throwing stove with Andy. Cole did an excellent job holding the leaders, Rick said. Cole was excited to hear that.

When the horn blew, the horses started and charged hard. They maybe didn’t get the rail but were three wide all the way around the track and managed to cross the finish line first, stopping the clock at a 1:16.99, good enough for sixth on the day.

I think he had an edge to go just that little bit faster at the end when his hat blew off. Ricky’s hat never falls off. I think I will have to get him one of those strings to tie under his chin if this keeps up.

Thank you to TerraCore Rentals for sponsoring us this race meet here in High River.

We were so happy to meet a little fan named Zack tonight, along with his little sister Ali.

You see, Zack was the lucky recipient who received our mini chuckwagon giveaway after the race. Zack showed so much excitement when he came back to the barn. He couldn’t say thank you enough. He was all smiles.

Ricky signed a poster for the kids, gave them a few candies and then they all climbed up into the wagon for a photograph. Those kids sure made our day.

I have to tell you, we learned today that a close friend’s family member passed on today. Just a young person in about their 20s. Broke our hearts to hear this, and my heart hurts for the parents. Every day is a special day and we need to live every day to the fullest with no regrets.

Be grateful for small things, big things and everything in between. Count your blessings, not your problems.

Medicine Hat: Night Three (June 13)

Today was Saturday! One of the best days of the week. For one, it was farmers’ market at the hall next door. And two, garage sales were on the menu! I stocked up on fresh eggs and vegetables, and refrained from buying any sweet goodies. Then my friend Lucy and I headed out on the town to sniff out all the great deals at the garage sales. And deals we found! A few clothes, a brand new water hose for my trailer, a Star Wars costume for my grandson Coy, a purse, a few movies and a great deal of $40 on a Sirius Satellite radio so we can hear the races at the barn. Yippee!!

The kids were very efficient today getting the afternoon chores done. Cody and Allie showed up last night for the weekend to help, and Kyle, a local friend, pitched in too. Just relieves me from the barn to cook some supper and head with Rick to a tailgate party to meet some folks and sign some posters. Life on the road with all the kids is never boring. They make us chuckle. Ohhhh to be kids again.

While at the tailgate party, we got to meet the local royalty and have our photo taken together. Great gals! After the races we were greeted by our some of our favourite young ladies from Medicine Hat, some of Rick’s biggest fans, Kathalina and Juliana. Love their smiles. Tonight the little wagon Rick handed out was given to a grade 12 student named Brittany. She came back to the barn to say thank you. What a firm handshake that girl has. Rick was impressed and so was I.

Tonight’s race off barrel 3 was interesting. Left Wheeler Duba was hard to hold. He wanted to go. As you can see, just as the horn sounded, he reared up. Air on Left Leader, Ranger on Right Leader, Duba on Left Wheeler and Ernie on Right Wheeler were the hook. Bingo and Stadium both went again, and Chanse rode Bingo and we had Cole go tonight on Stadium. Cole is a new outrider. We are working him into the Team and he’s doing great.

With Medicine Hat being a short track, if you don’t get out first you usually come in last. That’s how we ended up today but we still posted a 14th on the day. So we’ll take that.

The past should be left in the past or it can steal your future. Live life for what tomorrow can bring and not what yesterday has taken away. Every day is a gift.

Medicine Hat: Night One (June 11)

Show number three on the WPCA tour is underway. On Monday, our caravan of three units pulled out of the city of Saskatoon by 6:30am. We decided to pull an early one by rising at 4. Our plan to arrive in Medicine Hat by noon went as planned, but what we didn’t realize was the temperature that day in The Hat was in the 35 degrees range. Oh my goodness, even for a girl who likes heat it was HOT!

Nonetheless, we had to set up the pens, unload the horses, set up the barn and prepare the rest of the camp. Let me tell you, we took lots of breaks that day. Our evening was an early one, as we were all exhausted.

Tuesday was bit of a down day, although we did hook one set of horses in the morning. Once that was taken care of, it was time to head to the office in the back of my trailer do catch-up on the bills to be paid. The darn things follow me on the road too.

Wednesday was a time for me to take a break from the barns and hit the golf course. Not for just any old game—there was a tournament organized with some local businesses to bid on chuckwagon drivers to be on their team. Money was raised for humanitarian charity work, plus it was a great time to meet some new potential sponsors for the chuckwagons. As Rick does not golf, I got to represent him in the tournament. Richard from Rodeo Ford out of Medicine Hat purchased me to play on his team along with Derek and Grant. We had lots of laughs, a few beverages and many great shots that day. And, to our surprise, our team came out on top, each winning $875. I think that’s more than what Rick wins on any given day money! Well, almost!

While today was a warm one as well, we had some little visitors stop by the barns to meet some of the drivers. The WPCA arranged for some of the local schools to come down and see just what it is we do and also get up close and personal with the horses as well. So many kids and so many questions. What a great idea to get the young interested, then go home to tell their parents and then have them come to the races. Many of the schools were given free tickets for the kids. Rick always does a great job handing out candy and signing posters for the wee ones.

Tonight we also had some awesome visitors. About five years ago, we met Astrid and Jan from the Netherlands. They happened to be in Medicine Hat visiting some relatives. They came by the barns and we chatted them up about our lifestyle on the road. They went to the races and were hooked. They have come back to Canada with another couple, Stephan and Heidi, to show them the races live. It’s just not the same as seeing it on the internet. Fans for life! They loved it.

As for the race tonight, by the time it was heat 11 it had cooled off somewhat. There are 12 heats here in Medicine Hat because there are only 3 chuckwagons to a heat. Here we are carrying the Northwell Oilfield Hauling Tarp, an excellent sponsor for a few years now. Rick was off the 2 barrel with the red shirts. Tonight Chance Vigen rode Bingo and Dustin Gorst rode Stadium. Those boys both did awesome jobs. The boys pulling the wagon were Air Afair – Left Leaders, Ranger – Right Leader, Duba – Left Wheeler and Ernie – Right Wheeler. These horses are the newer ones from the ranch. They will be going every night here, I think. The start at the horn wasn’t quite where Rick would have liked it, but they went. He turned with Kelly and Layne, and stayed right with Kelly two wide all the way around the track, coming in second just a horse-length behind. It gave us a 17th place on the day. Tomorrow we will use the track time at 8am to hook an outfit and give them a blow.

Promote what YOU LOVE instead of bashing what YOU HATE.

Saskatoon: Night Four (June 7)

Another day, another dollar, as they say. What beautiful weather we had today. Very hot with some wind, thank goodness, or it would have been unbearable for some. I totally love the hot weather.

Our system was changed up a bit today with the early race time. We again enjoyed a quiet morning, just Rick and I, discussing our day-to-day journey so far. Some days people get so caught up in their jobs, duties and other things that they miss the moments that count. We love what we do but when people come into our lives, with different issues that affect their life and share them with us, we come down to their level and realize that the sport we are involved in just doesn’t mean so much in the big picture of things.

Rick and I are so thankful to have met a beautiful soul, Stephanie, her friend Chantelle and her kids this weekend. As I shared in yesterday’s blog, Stephanie’s fiancé has cancer. And they have been dealing with this for a while now. We are thankful to have been able to open our “Home Away from Home” lifestyle with the both of them. It was a time for Stephanie to let go, and just be, around the horses. It was therapeutic. I totally believe that people come into our lives for a reason, and they also leave for a reason as well.

Having 21 head of horses on the road comes with a whole lot of love and care. One of our newest horses, Vegas, was showing a bit of soreness on his left front ankle. So we ordered up the vet from the University of Saskatoon to come out and check things out. Nothing serious was found, just a bit of a bruise. We take all injuries very seriously and tend to them immediately. They are just like our babies.

crop 20150606_113404[2] 1

With all ages of folks enjoying the races, an elderly lady was today’s lucky recipient of our mini chuckwagon. She was very excited, to say the least. We are so glad to put a smile on someone’s face.

crop IMG_2955[3]

With the races taking place at 2:15pm, there was little time to sit after morning chores and before the beginning of races. In no time, I was on my way to the track with Cayley and our two outriding horses. This is my job, to get them to the outriders on time. Rick was on barrel 4 today with the same hook as yesterday: Speedy – Left Leader, Nickle – Right Leader, Sneakers – Left Wheeler, Law – Right Wheeler, with Bingo ridden by Chanse V. and Trixter with a new outrider, Cole Sommerville. They both did a great job. The horses started okay, but didn’t get after it after coming around the top barrel.  They usually have a bit more charge. At any rate, at the end of the race Rick managed to come up between Kelly and Rae to post a time of 1:17.40. Good enough for seventh on the day, and sixth in the show. Mark Sutherland won the title, and it was his first win of his career. We are sitting fourth in the world standings.

We are headed to bed early as we are hoping to get a very speedy start to go south to Medicine Hat in the morning.

Saskatoon: Night Three (June 6)

What a beautiful morning it was. The quietness at 6am is breathtaking. Not many bodies are up and at it. The horses whinny as Rick enters the barn to feed them their morning oats and then they are satisfied. I sat out and had a cup of java with Rick and visited with Chad Harden’s dad. Just shootin’ the breeze.

Mornings are my favourite time of the day. I think I’ve relayed that a few times before. In the quietness, it makes me feel so grateful for all that I’ve been given and for all that is around me. I am so fortunate to have a wonderful husband, three awesome adult kids and one GREAT grandkid.

This morning we were elated when two young ladies came to help with the barn chores. We met them the night before when one of their daughters was the lucky recipient of our little chuckwagon we hand out. So in chatting at our barn Rick said to Stephanie, who was visiting a chuckwagon race for the first time, “We’ll see you at 7am to help out with the morning chores.” Stephanie replied, “Do I meet you right here?” “You bet!” Rick replied, not thinking she would show.

Ricky was wrong! Stephanie and her sidekick showed up right at 7am, with Timmies coffee and doughnuts in hand, ready to be put to work. And work they did. One grabbed a pitchfork and the other the hose to fill the buckets up with fresh water. Stephanie, not ever having this kind of opportunity to get up close and personal with thoroughbred horses, was elated. What therapy this was for her. You see, Stephanie had a story to tell, unbeknownst to us.

Once chores were completed, we sat and enjoyed the warm sunshine and watched the horses stretch and play in their pens. In chatting, Stephanie shared a little of her current life with us. She had just returned from Germany, and her fiancé Cody is coming home from there today. Cody has cancer, at the young age of 26. He had chemo treatments here at home in Canada but then went abroad to Germany for more treatment. My heart was hurting for Stephanie and her situation. She sounded so strong, telling her story. At some point they were told he might only have three months to live. One really never knows anyone’s point of passing. But Stephanie came out, and was so thankful to come and join us in our morning duties with the horses. In her words, this was therapy. Cody was happy to hear that she was doing what she was. In the big picture of all things, chuckwagon racing means nothing, absolutely nothing, when you hear stories such as these. Keeping Stephanie and Cody in my prayers.

Another great night of racing, but it was threatened by some rain in the late afternoon. The dark clouds burst out in raindrops a couple of times but then the wind blew the clouds away to bring more warmth and sunshine for the chuckwagons to begin at 7:15. Rick hooked the good ol’ boys—Speedy on Left Lead, Nickle on Right Lead, Sneekers and Left Wheel and Law on Right Wheel—with outriding horses Ace and Andy being ridden by Chanse and Dustin. Coming off barrel 3, Ricky came out alongside Kelly off of 1. Chad was not far behind, with Rae Croteau bringing up the rear. When the dust settled and the race was finished, Kelly crossed the finish line first, with Ricky second, posting a 1:18.55. That’s good enough for a 10th on the day, and our aggregate standing is a respectable eighth place for the meet.

crop DSC_7772[2]

When Cody, our son, jumps in after the race he drives the outfit back to the barns. Rick grabs the little mini chuckwagon to give to a fan, and tonight the cutest little fella got to take it home. Gotta love those kids.

crop IMG_2954[1]

After we get back to the barns, the chores are all done and the horses are tucked in for the night, it’s time to head to the Harden camp to watch the evening races, which Dori has taped. We all give our critiquing opinions, eat a bowlful of popcorn and then head to our bed for some much needed rest.

Onward and upward to another day tomorrow. Time to hit the pillow.

Yesterday is but a dream. Tomorrow, a vision of hope. Look to this day for it is life.
